Reservoir Appoints Spek SVP of Creative and A&R

Reservoir Appoints Spek SVP of Creative and A&R

Reservoir is pleased to welcome accomplished songwriter, recording artist, producer, and executive Hussain “Spek” Yoosuf to its team as Senior Vice President of Creative and A&R.  Based in the company’s New York City headquarters, Spek joins Reservoir’s veteran creative team to further develop a rapidly expanding roster of active writers and producers around the world.

Spek arrives at Reservoir following a streak of impressive publishing work abroad. In 2005, he led overseas acquisitions for Canada’s Olé Media Management, serving as the publisher’s UK & European Representative based out of London.  In 2008, Spek founded Fairwood Music (Arabia), the first full-service music publisher in the United Arab Emirates and one-time representative of UMPG, EMI, Cherry Lane, and Roy Orbison Music.  Spek followed Fairwood with the 2011 launch of PopArabia, a company he founded that remains the leading music publisher in the Middle East.

Spek’s creative background is equally robust, with writing and production on several projects, including Reservoir writer Nitin Sawhney’s Mercury Prize nominated album, Beyond Skin.  Coupled with his own background as a performing artist, first in the trailblazing Canadian hip-hop act Dream Warriors and later in the jazz-rap collective Us3, Spek’s perspective on the business of songwriting is uniquely multifaceted.

“We’re excited to add an executive as accomplished and versatile as Spek to the team,” says Reservoir COO Rell Lafargue.  “We’re a progressive publisher, and Spek has proven to be incredibly forward-thinking throughout his career.  Not only has he been extraordinarily successful behind the desk, but he’s also done it on the mic, behind the board, and onstage worldwide, which brings a special insight to our songwriters as they build careers with Reservoir.”

The hire will see Spek professionally reunited with London-based Managing Director Annette Barrett, who first signed him to Warner/Chappell as a songwriter in 1997.  Spek adds over twenty years of experience to Reservoir’s creative team, which is headed by Barrett and includes industry veterans Faith Newman in New York, Charlie Pinder in London, and Patrick Conseil in Los Angeles, who collectively oversee an active roster of over thirty writers worldwide.

“A history like Spek’s, with its range of experience and insight, is rare and valuable in this role,” Barrett says.  “It’s a pleasure to work with such talent again.”

Wesbild Sponsors Burke Mountain School Bus

Today, local parents and students proudly announced that there will be a school bus to serve the Burke Mountain community. They were joined by Coquitlam City Councillor Craig Hodge, who assisted Burke parents in making this initiative a reality; and Jen Derbyshire of Wesbild Holdings Ltd., who announced a financial contribution of $7,000.

“I’d like to thank the Burke Mountain parents who helped organize the student bus service and Wesbild for the generous donation to start this service,” said Councillor Hodge. “This is another example of how residents and business are working together to build a great community here on Burke Mountain.”

“We are pleased to provide a financial gift to Burke Mountain students to get to and from school safely,” said Ms. Derbyshire. “We would like to thank Councillor Hodge and the community parents who rallied together to bring a school bus to Burke Mountain for the opportunity to contribute to this initiative.”

The logistics for the school bus were put together by a parent-led organizing committee. The bus will be available for both the morning pick-up and afternoon drop-off. The bus will service Leigh Elementary School, Kwayhquitlum Middle School, Minnekhada Middle School, and Terry Fox Secondary School. Parents can sign-up their students for the bus service by contacting Susan Patel of the parent organizing committee at Susie.Patel@me.com.

Nitin Sawhney Joins The Reservoir Roster

Reservoir is thrilled to announce the signing of accomplished composer, producer, and musician Nitin Sawhney.  The company will publish all future works created by Sawhney, whose existing catalog of electronica, jazz, and film and television scores boasts over six hundred titles.

Sawhney is regarded as one of the industry’s most versatile contemporary composers, alternately crafting envelope-pushing albums and impactful soundtracks, and pursuing ‘extracurricular’ endeavors like BBC Radio 2 series Nitin Sawhney Spins The Globe and the occasional TEDx Talk.

At the core of Sawhney’s success is a portfolio rich with exceptional composition and production. His nine internationally released albums have received numerous accolades, including a Mercury Prize nomination and a host of international entertainment awards.

Equally successful are Sawhney’s scores for visual media, which include some sixty titles for film and television alone. Among his notable compositions are two Ivor Novello-nominated works: the score for celebrated British television drama Second Generation, and music for the Sony Playstation video game Enslaved, for which Sawhney teamed up with long-time collaborator and friend, actor-director Andy Serkis.  Several additional scores include composition for the BAFTA-nominated BBC series Human Planet; an original score for the Hitchcock thriller The Lodger, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra; prolific pieces for theatrical companies Cirque Du Soleil, Akram Khan, and Complicite; and the soundtrack to acclaimed Mira Nair film The Namesake.  Wonders of the Monsoon, a new flagship series airing on BBC Two, made its October debut featuring a soundtrack composed by Sawhney, which The Independent praises as an effectively stirring part of the production.

Reverb Music Managing Director Annette Barrett will work closely with Sawhney out of Reservoir’s London office, helping him identify and pursue new creative challenges.

“I’ve always admired Nitin’s work,” Barrett says.  “His curiosity about music is insatiable, and because of that his creative and collaborative potential is unlimited.”  To date, Sawhney’s recording collaborations include work with such music industry elite as Sir Paul McCartney, Sting, and Jeff Beck, as well as contemporary artists Joss Stone, Norah Jones, and Anoushka Shankar.

Reservoir President Golnar Khosrowshahi is well poised to lead the team in sourcing new opportunities for Sawhney, both through the company’s capable creative staff and through her role as President and Chair of the Board of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad, a creative collective whose global ethos echoes Nitin’s own work.

Khosrowshahi states, “There is a real opportunity for both Nitin and Reservoir to grow from the experience of working together, exchanging ideas, and exploring business endeavors in a way we might not have without the distinct texture of Nitin’s work and his unique approach to the industry.  We welcome Nitin into our active roster and look forward to supporting his development in any way that we can.”

Sawhney is currently at work supporting his forthcoming tenth album, Dystopian Dream, having performed songs from the release at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall earlier this month.  The virtuoso says of his new partnership, “I feel excited and honored to have my forthcoming work represented by Reservoir.  They have already clearly demonstrated their deep understanding of artists and how to manage artistic catharsis, expression, and communication. I look forward to a long and constructive partnership in the days ahead”.
